Before you call anyone

HVAC not working? Start with what it is actually doing.

Find the symptom below and you get the most likely cause plus the checks that cost nothing. Some of these you can fix in ten minutes. Some of them need a licensed pro, and we will tell you which is which rather than sending everyone to the same phone number.

Stop and call 911 first if any of these are true

  • You smell gas, or a rotten-egg odor near the furnace. Leave the house and call 911 from outside.
  • A carbon monoxide alarm is sounding. Get everyone out and call 911. Do not reset it and go back to bed.
  • You see smoke, or smell something burning from the equipment. Kill power at the breaker if you can do it safely.
  • The breaker trips again immediately after you reset it. Leave it off and stop resetting it.

None of those are an HVAC call until everyone is out of the house. The heating or cooling problem comes after.

When it is worth paying someone

Anything involving refrigerant, the sealed system, gas, or the inside of the electrical panel needs a licensed tech, and in California refrigerant work legally requires EPA Section 608 certification. Filters, thermostat batteries, breakers, condensate lines and clearing the outdoor unit are all homeowner jobs, and our maintenance guides walk through those.

When you do need a pro, Climate Pros SD matches you with a licensed local one across San Diego County. Two questions worth asking whoever you call: is a tech available today, yes or no, and what is the diagnostic fee as a dollar figure. A company that will not answer either one on the phone is telling you something.

If the system is old enough that you are weighing the repair against replacing it, our repair versus replace guide has the math, and every service we cover is listed with what it includes.
